Improved Keyless Entry Systems

Keyless entry has been a target for thieves, particularly with “relay attacks,” where two thieves work together using relay devices to mimic the key fob's signal and unlock the car. To combat this, automakers are introducing motion-sensor fobs that deactivate when not in use and require physical movement to be reactivated. Some systems also rely on proximity detection, making relay attacks more challenging.

Encrypted Communication

Modern vehicles use encrypted communication between the key fob and the car, which makes it difficult for hackers to intercept and replicate signals. This helps prevent code-grabbing attacks, where thieves capture and reuse key fob signals.

Enhanced Immobilizers and Alarms

Since the early 2000s, immobilizers have been standard in most UK cars, but newer models use dual-layer encryption and are often tied to multiple systems (like the engine control unit and transmission), making hot-wiring nearly impossible. Cars today also have more sophisticated alarm systems that are sensitive to even minor intrusions, and some can alert the owner via smartphone.

Tracking Technology

Vehicle manufacturers and aftermarket companies offer GPS tracking devices that allow owners and authorities to locate a car if it's stolen. In many models, these are integrated into the car’s software, allowing owners to track the vehicle via a smartphone app.

Some cars come with remote disabling capabilities, where the owner or authorities can shut down the engine remotely if the car is stolen, limiting how far the thief can drive it.

Biometric or PIN Verification

Some luxury and high-tech vehicles now include additional layers of security, such as fingerprint sensors or PIN code entry for starting the engine. This requires the presence of a physical key and biometric data, making unauthorized starting very difficult.

While these features don’t eliminate theft entirely, they make it harder, requiring specialized equipment and tactics that deter many criminals. However, car thieves still find new methods, so automakers continually update security measures to stay ahead of these threats.
